India 101: Basics of Traveling in India
We're excited to welcome you to India! Since many of our guests will be visiting for the first time, we've put together some essential tips to help you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Health & Hygiene
- Probiotics: We recommend you start taking a probiotic 7 days before traveling to India and each day you are here to help your digestive system adjust.
- Water safety: Stick to bottled water and avoid ice in drinks (ice at the venue will be made of bottled water). Use bottled water even when brushing your teeth.
- Hand hygiene: Carry hand sanitizer and use it frequently, especially before eating.
- Food safety: Be cautious with street food; opt for busy stalls with high turnover if you do try street food. Try to avoid cold food outside of our venue.
- Medications: Bring any prescription medications you need, plus basics like pain relievers, anti-diarrheal medicine, and motion sickness pills if you're prone to it.
Safety & Documents
- Documents: Keep a copy of your passport and important documents. We recommend having digital copies stored in the cloud as well as physical photocopies.
- Valuables: Use hotel safes for valuables and avoid displaying expensive items, especially in crowded areas.
- Transportation: Use reputable transportation services. Our wedding planners can help arrange reliable drivers if you're exploring beyond our venue.
- Emergency contacts: Save important phone numbers, including local emergency services, your country's embassy in India, and our wedding coordinators.
Cultural Tips
- Greetings: The traditional Indian greeting is "Namaste" with palms pressed together. This is always appreciated and respected.
- Temple etiquette: Remove shoes before entering temples and religious sites. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) when visiting religious places.
- Photography: Always ask permission before taking photos of people, especially in rural areas or at religious sites.
- Bargaining: Bargaining is expected in markets, but do so respectfully. Start at about 50-60% of the initial asking price and work from there.
- Tipping: Tipping is customary in India. For restaurants, 10% is standard if service charge isn't included. For drivers and guides, 200-500 rupees per day is appropriate.
Practical Matters
- Currency: The Indian Rupee (₹) is the local currency. ATMs are widely available in cities, but it's good to carry some cash, especially for small purchases and tips.
- Electricity: India uses 230V, 50Hz electricity with round pin plugs (Types C, D, and M). Bring a universal adapter if needed.
- Internet & Communication: Consider purchasing a local SIM card for affordable data and calls. Major providers include Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone. Our wedding planners can help you with this upon arrival.
- Weather protection: Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for daytime activities. December in Rajasthan can be sunny even though temperatures are moderate.
- Dress code: India tends to be more conservative with dress. When not at wedding events, we recommend modest clothing, especially when visiting public places and religious sites.
